You don’t mention your state, but in Pennsylvania we can charge reasonable travel and admin/clerical feeds as long as it is agreed to with customer before he appointment. I feel that some in my area charge higher fees for travel and admin fees but it’s their business.
If those kind of fees are not allowed in your state, the only thing you can do is report them to the entity that oversees notaries (typically the Secretary of State).
Are you sure about that? My state says that the only other fee a notary may charge is a reasonable amount for travel. It’s just one statement but it’s pretty clear that we can’t charge anything except for notarization and travel.
I’m in VA and I’ve already done my share of reporting notaries regarding the advertising of notario publico. I hate to be the only person who reports notaries. It’s bad when you’re the notary reporting other notaries. If I were to report everyone I see who has crazy extra fees, it would never end.
