I’m a big advocate for Pitt Bulls and love them dearly however when it comes to business and people it’s important to respect people and how they feel about any animal. Going forward when you connect with the signer to confirm the appointment I would stress to make sure any pets are safely secured or they risk having their appointment canceled.
So sorry that happened to you ! I have now incorporated a “put away all pets” statement in my confirmation text/email messages.
Thank you! I most certainly have!
You have to do what is best for you and NO ONE can second guess the decision you had to make for your personal safety.
I will say this: During COVID we had to get creative with signing locations sometimes. It wasn’t ideal to do a loan signing outside on the porch or inside a garage with the door open, but we all did what we had to do. Which included cancelling the signing for our own personal safety when our signers were obviously sick with COVID even when they told us during the confirmation call that they were healthy and fine.
But for you, things weren’t off to a great start to begin with – this guy greeting you at his door half dressed for a his scheduled loan signing appointment?! WTF. And if he wouldn’t simply put his dog in the other room for the signing, well then I don’t suppose suggesting doing the signing on his porch without his dog would have been a welcomed solution either.
You were professional and friendly, offered a reasonable solution, and stood your ground. You did what you had to do to be safe and you kept your hiring company informed. PERFECT.
I try to remain professional at all times and under all circumstances. I’ve never encountered anything like this before and because of this, I have now adopted a “put away all pets” rule when confirming signing appointments. It was clear that I was not going to go inside when I see a pitbull standing in the middle of the living room and its owner saying that the dog doesn’t “want to go into another room.” And it was also clear that he wasn’t prepared for the signing, maybe he was having second thoughts because his whole demeanor was all about, “we ain’t doing this today!” I love doing notary work and I know that this too will go into my bank of experiences! And I will hope that all pet owners/lovers understand that not everyone love your pet like you do. It’s no shade, it’s all about safety. I have a son who is waiting for me to return home in one piece. So I take my safety very serious because just like they love their pets, I love my son. How horrific it would be for him to have to visit me in a hospital with half my face chewed off! I hate to be so graphic, but the magnitude of the situation is simply please put all pets away, it can get dangerous and go left very quickly!
Need to say that must have had a truly unique experience ~ the kind that causes bad dreams. Have to confess your story did make me laugh.
Thank you for that suggestion, but it’s a still “please put away all pets for the safety of the notary” for me! LOL!
Speaking for myself, there is absolutely nothing wrong with me. I recognize that pets are members of the family, but I would prefer that they, toddlers and people not a part of the signing process not be present at the signing table. I do not provide edible treats nor a reason for a request that should be considered as a courtesy and for efficiency and effectiveness of the process. I respect your choice, however.
