Scammers are getting busy

It’s a scam they are phishing and want to send payment then have you deposit a bad check

Totally agree with your statement!

Hi Carl,

I received exactly the same email. I gave them an Estimate, he wanted to pay by check beforehand. No biggy, until I received the email that stated his boss would be paying for it and the fee for the photographer was included. I wrote back and told him that’s an absolute no go. He responded, pleading, to please not put his wedding at risk and I told him to either leave me alone or have the correspondence, along with the supposed check that was in the mail handed over to the authorities. Never heard from him again.

While it’s sad, I worked in the banking industry for way to long to fall for this.

When I got it here in California, I just automatically assumed it was a scam and deleted it. I told my friend, well I guess I am official as I am now getting spam on my business email! lol

Thanks for posting this and for all the responses. It really helps to see the magnitude that these entities will go to in their efforts to elicit cash from people and the manner in which they do it. It is very educational to also see some of the responses the entities get from their efforts. Thanks for helping to educate us.

Wow! I am so happy I am part of this forum. I received the same thing word for word and I am also an ordained officiant in Texas and have gotten legit emails from clients in the past ,so I thought odd ,but didn’t question as much. Of course, the “photographer fee” included part from their boss was after I gave my business address to mail the agreed upon proceeds which was 500 for the services needed. When I received the seemingly very authentic check for 2200 dollars instead, and was told it was the “photographer’s fee” included and to deposit in my account and go from there. I immediately knew NOT a chance! So, I contacted the bank and the company for the fraud and reported the bogus email and blocked all correspondence. The scammers out here are getting more cleaver and it is really annoying that they pray on those of us just making an honest living in our businesses. I just figured I would add my version since it almost played completely out on my end until I wised up at the end.

LOL I received the same type of scam email, except asking for a DJ. I am ordained in Washington, so I also officiate weddings. But I have gotten to be an expert at spotting spam/scam/phishing. There is a distinct pattern.

They are also getting clever with the phishing scams via text message, pretending to be from a credit union. Whatever you do, do NOT click their links within the message. Block and report as phishing.

Whenever I get a text or email that looks suspicious to me, I just ignore it. I get emails or texts from time to time saying that I had bought this or that and that the charge went to my credit card or Paypal, or wherever. There is always a phone number to call. I will do a quick check of my bank or credit card to make sure nothing has actually been charged and then just forget about it. I’m NOT going to call a random phone number and give them a chance to actually get information from me.

Yes, absolutely NOT going to call or click their stupid scammer link. I don’t even have an account at WSECU. But I think about people like my dear ol’ dad receiving this alarming text message or email message about a purchase and unsuspectingly clicking the links… and people fall for it. It is a numbers game. They know SOMEONE SOMEWHERE is going to fall for it.

Same here, if I don’t recognize it, report junk, block and delete.
