Action Needed: California RON Bill Clears Key Committee

On Thursday, January 20th, the California Assembly Appropriations Committee heard the Online Notarization bill currently moving through the California Legislature. If you missed the hearing, you may watch the replay here.

At the hearing, the CLIN testified in strong support for the bill, along with Disability Rights California. There was no registered or oral opposition testimony given. The bill was passed out of the Appropriations Committee by a 12-0 vote and will now move on to the Assembly Floor, where a vote will be held next week.

At this time it is important that you reach out to your Assemblyman to register your support and urge an “aye” vote. You can find your representative here. Click on their name to be taken to their website, then scroll to the bottom of page to find their capital office phone number. When you call, tell the staffer that you are a constituent, a California Notary and that you support AB 1093, the Remote Online Notaries Public Act and ask for an “aye” vote.

Unless, of course, you are AGAINST the bill. A lot has been written regarding RON. As it goes nation wide, it spells the END of mobile notary as we know it. The large Title Cos. will hire own notaries, pay them cheap and we will be OUT of business! :smiling_face_with_tear:

John, I disagree entirely. There will always be a place for in person Notarization. The situation you described hasn’t happened in your state, which has been online for several years. Nor has it happened in VA who has been online for 10 years. Also, according to the Solidifi annual mortgage experience report some 81% of borrowers still prefer to close in person versus online. Remote online notarization is meant expand access to notary services and be a tool to add to your toolbox, it’s not meant to replace traditional a notarization outright.

What is that thing called, unintended consequences?
This group seems to be against it.

That’s an entirely different bill. It would amount to a federal take over of the office of notary public. Apples and oranges.
