Can A VA Notary perform notarizations in Washington DC
Do you have a place of employment in DC? If not, then usually no.
So is the TC or SS is based there then it doesn’t count correct ?
No. Title companies are all over the country. Im in PA and see title companies from all over the country. But, i still have to have my feet planted in PA to work.
I’m a VT notary and have never been involved with notarizations in VA or DC. I found a few interesting passages in notary handbooks.
A Handbook for Virginia Notaries (April 6, 2021) on page 9 says
A notary should keep the following things in mind:
- Virginia notaries may perform their duties outside of the Commonwealth if the document is for use in the Commonwealth.
The District of Columbia Notary Public Handbook (revised 8-2023) on page 5 says there is such a thing as a Business Notary “whose primary place of business or employment is within the District” so if that applies to you and you can get your boss to write a letter, you could apply for a DC notary commission.
Many of the people on this forum are mobile notaries and often perform notarizations for real estate signings. For those, saying the documents are for use in the District wouldn’t be very believable unless the real estate was located in the district. The way these signings are assigned to notaries, the person giving the assignment often doesn’t know where the real state is located. So if you only have a VA commission and accept an assignment for a signer in DC, you might often find yourself saying, once you see the documents, that you have to refuse to finish the assignment, which will get people mad at you.
Thank you guys ! This was really helpful
