First American disaster

I’ve done First American signings before, but this time had zero communication with them. I was assigned this last Wednesday, 12/24, and immediately scanned the documents and put my questions in the portal. The signing took place on 12/29. There were several tax documents from another state that I wasn’t familiar with. To add to that, the signer’s caretaker told me the signer was bedridden and might not be able to physically sign. I relayed that to First American, but got nothing. There were no instructions with the file either. Even after uploading the signed file, I didn’t eiven get confirmation that they received it. Is this typical for them? I don’t do much work for them.

I’m also astounded by the fact that they give you no warning about having to sign bedside. The signer was flat on his back and it was barely legible. He was also medicated but to what extent, I don’t know. I find it incredible that they gave me no warning.

Should be an Escrow Officer name and phone number on the ALTA

I know, but when you type in a comment, they can go to both Jot and First American if you check those boxes, and I did. I wanted my questions to be in writing.

Then not getting an answer isn’t them. Directions don’t always come in writing. They answer their phones -and give good guidance.

Next time I’ll write and call. Still no acknowledgement that they received it and they should already have it in hand. Very odd.

I’m hoping I don’t have to go back because the signer was difficult. He was in bed but kept trying to rush me. I didn’t even have a seat. I told him he could sign and then I’d find a table in the house to notarize on. He insisted I sit on a couch to do it, while pressuring me about the time. I was trying to be considerate and save him time. He also asked whom I report to and i said I’m an independent notary who was assigned this by a signing service and he insisted on seeing my credentials. I’m in my sixth year of business.

This is wild. Did you ever hear back from escrow?

Nope! Not a word from them with all my questions. All I got was a robotic email at the end saying “thanks.” So disappointing. Next time I’ll be sure to call instead of write. You can’t win. And Happy New Year to all you notaries reading this on NYE! I just finished writing a sheet of requirements for signers explaining how to have a successful notarization! What an exciting NYE.
