POA fees question

I had a request for POA (3). Does this mean 3 signers? If I am in Texas, and it is within 10 miles, what would you charge?

As to first question - that’s something you’d have to ask the hiring party

As to second part (fee) not enough information to begin to estimate the fee for this

Agree with Linda. Not enough information.

If what you mean is that you were hired to have someone sign a POA (only) — that is considered General Notary Work (GNW). What does Texas notary law allow you to charge as a notary? Does Texas allow you to charge additional fees such as travel fees, print fees, courier fees, etc.? Ask the hiring party how many signers you’ll have.

In California, a notary may charge $15 per notarized signature and we can charge additional fees.

My recommendation to cheryl_1_angel: Get acquainted with your Notary Handbook. Learn your notary laws inside/out. Memorize them to the point you can repeat them if ever questioned and know how to find them so you can cite them. This may save you some heartache down the road.

Power of Attorney, Three principles (signers)? That doesn’t make sense.

They may be asking to have 3 originals signed (people are funny like that)

That is most likely correct, Linda. I always have certified copies of power of attorney certificates on hand in case they are needed. This is a fundamental aspect of general Notary work, which necessitates meticulous record-keeping in your journal concerning the principal and the attorney in fact. A typical scenario would be a nephew in New York City requesting a Notary to meet him at a memory care home in La Jolla to authenticate a power of attorney for his wealthy aunt. These unexpected requests are common and should be carefully reviewed before agreeing to a meeting.

Your charge the Texas per notarization fee plus travel.

Pro tip- I state my fees and explain I cannot give an exact quote until I am present with all signers and the documents. People cannot tell how many notarial acts are included and teaching them over the phone is a drain on my billable time. I say “Sometimes witnesses are notarized, sometimes the principal. Some of the documents may include notarization for both signers and some only one. Some are Jurats and some are acknowledgments.”
