Hello. I’m a new Notary in CA, and my company wants me to notarize some documents for unclaimed property in both California and New York. I don’t have the documents yet to know what they are, but I’m wondering if anyone has had to notarize these type of documents, and if so, are they acknowledgments or jurats?
Welcome to Notary Cafe, Sasha!
Just keep in mind the signer must appear in person. If it is not readily evident by looking at the documents which notarial act is required, the signer or the hiring party will have to tell you which they want. It is not up to the notary to determine which notarial act to perform.
Good luck and let us know how it goes for you.
I’m in California and have notarized hundreds of them. The State Comptroller has the necessary affidavit to be downloaded from their website. Notarization is required if the amount exceeds $1,000.
@ewing_joe – Agree with you, Joe, up to a point. Your statement is true if the claimant is dealing directly with the State for their lost assets. However, if s/he has an agent acting on her/his behalf for claiming those assets (like in hiring some company to find and procure those assets), there may be additional document(s) to be notarized, such as a POA and a contract for services, etc.
I don’t know why people go through the expense of hiring someone to find their assets when they can do it themselves. But, some do.

@yolicue In my direct experience generally it’s because they’re elderly and without computer skills, and/or have no younger family members who are internet savvy, or aren’t aware they’re due any funds, etc., etc., etc.
Of course, there are always those who just don’t want to take the time to learn & Research it online.
Thank you for you response. I appreciate it. I’m still confused, however. How does the person/business know which one they will need to be able to tell me? I thought the document(s) would designate which one is needed based on the language on the document where signage would be. I don’t know that most businesses let alone individuals know what either is or would be able to determine what they’d need.
Hi Joe. Thank you for your response. I will follow-up with State Controller Office for further clarification.
This is not for a claim for an individual. It’s a claim for my company/employer as I mentioned.
Well, a claim could be listed under their TIN number. The legal department holding the money is not gonna release it without proper legal paperwork. When that arrives, notarize it and your job is done.
There are several search and rescue operations out there. One requires a POA and an agreement on the % of the finders fee. The other is real estate related where they find a property (usually raw land), find the owner, negotiate a sale, then send you a deed and a check. You meet with the seller, notarize his signature, and hand him his check. Either service requires a Notary Public and pays pretty well.
