“We are welcoming you to come officiant our wedding ceremony coming up on nov 8th,2025 in please let us know your availability so we can tell you more about our beautiful day?” This is the verbatim text message I just received from 470-636-3755.
It sucks that we must dodge scams right and left. (BTW, I am ordained in WA and also perform wedding ceremonies in addition to notary.)
Luckily, there is a pattern to some of these text scams. First off, the request comes to via text (or email) when it should be a simple phone call. This scam text gives off a weird vibe for me – as if it has been passed back and forth through Google Translate. The wording is off, and they added a question mark at the end, even though they did not ask a question. The scam query will have incomplete info – in this one, no mention of where or when the ceremony will be held and does not offer wedding couple’s names. The biggest sign it is a scam: when I called 470-636-3755, I hear an odd ringing sound, as if I am calling someone overseas, even though when I looked up the number it appears to be a cellphone in Atlanta, GA. I was expecting it to be VOIP number - where scammers make calls and send texts via computer. And of course as expected, no one will answer my call even though they literally just sent the text to me.
So what’s the scam? They ultimately want your banking info. Scammers will make contact then often will propose they send you a check to pay in advance usually for more than required and of course the check will bounce eventually. It is a ploy to obtain your banking info when you deposit it and then you will find this out too late that it is no good. (This type of text scam applies to notary public and loan signing services as well and it can come via text message or email.)
