You could have notified them to add an additional fee for the oversized package when received. I do this now if I get a refi with over 150 pages as they are not typically more than 125-150 these days. Most companies know this and will toss another $10-$20 your way, some will bock and won’t want to, those would be ones you may consider not doing closings for in the future. Reverse mortgage packages are always larger than the normal refi (typically between 150-200pgs) but not usually over 200 pages. I’ve never received in over 11,000 loans I’ve closed, any document package over 240 pages. 400 pages? What in the world is in the document package to make it so ridiculously large? I wouldn’t do a reverse for less than $150 with little travel because it is signing typically senior citizens that will take a much longer time. Unless they are in great shape and can sign at a normal refi pace you will be there at least 1 - 2 hours. Time is money and our time is valuable. Don’t feel guilty for asking for money to cover your time and expense. I did for years but do no longer. The agent calling you most likely gets health insurance, vacation time, sick time, retirement, etc. We get nothing, Zero, Zippa, Nada. We are self employed ie on our own to cover everything as our own employer. We must cover everything in our lives with what we get from our fees. Auto expense, office expense, home, vacation, sick, retirement, etc. For many of us this is our LIVING not a part time gig we do on the side. Although, I get lots of enjoyment out of my job traveling from place to place meeting new people every day, it is a JOB. I cover a 130 mile radius in 2 states and it is pretty common for me to drive 200-300 miles in a day completing 5-10 closings. If you are relying on this business for your livelihood you might take the time to seriously take a look at what your expenses are and what you are worth. If you don’t fee like you are being gypped on every closing you might grow to love doing this business!
