How many notaries does it take to do a RON session. I had a RON session scheduled for 7pm this Sunday evening. I received the final version of the estate documents around 5:40 pm same day. Uploaded the documents to the platform, started tagging the documents, half way through system problems occurred. One of the primary signers called at 6:02pm, stated an additional document needed to be added. Had to push things back to 7:30pm. One of the witnesses signed on the platform early, while I was still in the process of tagging the documents. That witness closed out of the platform, that action not me off the session. Restarted the session, the next thing, a witnesses and one of the primary signer could not pass the security process. Had to get tech support to convert them to biometrics. Want to know something funny, all the parties involved were all notaries except for one of the primary signer. Needless to say, everyone had an opinion how things so be done. I received some good tips and bad. Until one individual told me, stop making things so complicated. That individual wanted me to notarize a document that had numerous blank fields. Even asked me what statute says we can’t notarized a document with blank fields left unanswered. In Florida there’s this little statute that states the following: Fla. Stat. 117.107(10) “A notary public may not notarize a signature on a document if the document is incomplete or blank. However, an endorsement or assignment in blank of a negotiable or nonnegotiable not and the assignment in blank of any instrument given as security for such note is deemed incomplete.” Not to make things harder, the second signer want each witnesses to be put in a specific order. What should have probably taken an hour at most, turned into 3 hours. Had to remind myself “when they paid, they say”. Here’s the good news, got the order completed and got paid. Plus, I always learn from these types of experiences. I learned BlueNotary allow Ipads to be used in their RON sessions, well at least from the signers side. Thanks for allowing me to vent…
@cfletcher Thank You for taking the time to delineate multiple key elements that highlight in bas-relief that the Remote Online Notarization [RON] component of our business sector is simply still not quite ready for prime time.
In my direct experience, there are many elements that are in need of improvement prior to RON signings being able to meet the industry standards. Those systems typically support the General Notary Work [GNW] documents within our industry.
Tangentially, there are a few Title/Escrow Companies [T/ECs] that have developed and/or utilize stellar systems. Truly, I simply LOVE working with those systems. Occasionally, there are technical glitches encountered; however, overall they’re quite efficient & effective.
The overarching concept of protecting signer(s) from fraud & theft still has more work to be done for GNW via RON. Each Notary Public/Professional Signing Agent will need to continue being vigilant.
I agree that RON platforms can sometimes experience glitches, which can pose challenges for both users and customers. Weekends, in particular, tend to exacerbate these issues due to the limited availability of technical support. Additionally, it’s important to recognize that some customers may struggle with navigating these platforms effectively.
For instance, there were two cases where customers reported inaccuracies in the knowledge-based authentication (KBA) process. One question about a previous residential address contained an error, with one digit being incorrect. Since the system lacked a “none of the above” option, these individuals were unable to pass the KBA process. Thankfully, customer support was able to assist by transitioning these users to the biometric authentication process.
However, I encountered a similar issue with Amrock’s closed-ended platform system. Unfortunately, this led to the notarization process being canceled entirely.
@cfletcher Absolutely!
Wondering if the RON platform designers have a “Suggestion Box” . . .
The experiences & insights you conveyed in detail above would assist them greatly with improvements & efficiencies for ongoing design of their platforms!
Thanks for sharing your experience. I’ve encountered similar challenges with RON—too many tech issues, too much time, too expensive to maintain service on a platform, and not enough pay. For now, I’ve decided to stick with in-person signings, as the compensation is more fair and consistent.
