This was a surprising twist today

I get a frantic email - where are the documents you shipped Friday they are not even tracking.

The email included a FedEx label. Which seemed odd. And sure enough the tracking number has no data. Plus this will sound weird but - I did not recognize the label as anything I had printed before - the font was wrong. Sounds strange but - I thought at that point something was up.

So I indicate the shipping center doesn’t give receipts but I’ll go ask in the off chance it didn’t go out.

I called and they don’t have anything that was missed.

I get another email from the Title Company - found the documents they went to the wrong title office and I’m having them shipped to us now.

So I find my downloaded file and this was one that includes a shipping label in the documents that goes to title so they can use it to send to the lender. I could not find the shipping label I was sent that day and the portal did not allow me to access those files.

Then I get a call from someone in Quality Control with the service and we have a long conversation about this file because I had never returned an error to them so he wanted to get my explanation. And I told him I felt like a document preparer had sent me the wrong label because why would they email me the correct label TODAY after everything already shipped and title had found the documents.

He could access the original shipping label I had been sent. Sure enough, I was sent the wrong return label for that file. Someone was in a hurry and goofed. So I just asked him to make sure it didn’t reduce my pay or impact my ranking with their service and I took one for the team with title and didn’t mind doing that but it wasn’t a notary error.

No problem. He was a nice guy. But honestly everyone makes mistakes. People should just own it.

Wheeeee it’s Monday.

YES! That happened to me too! I sent a document via FedEx to the auditors office and it was supposed to arrive 9/17. The FedEx tracking showed it still in transit on 9/17 with zero movement! So I called the auditors office directly in a panic. The clerk checked and then told me the document was delivered by FedEx early on 9/15. But man oh man, the panic I was in. I don’t know what the heck happened with FedEx, system glitch, driver error, or what. FedEx tracking is usually reliable.

This was a document preparer throwing the notary under the bus rather than admitting to title they gave said notary the wrong label.

I’m just grateful they looked into it to the extent they did, because I was absolved of responsibility and someone probably got their butt chewed. Or worse. Mistakes happen. But lying about mistakes is just not acceptable. IMO.

Yes, for heaven’s sake, the shipping label is PROVIDED BY THEM, so if there is an error in where the loan package was sent, that’s on them, not you. Yes - honesty is the best policy in this business, always. Totally agree with you.

I recently relocated to a different city about 70-75 miles from my previous city. So, early on, I was still trying to determine the number and locations of drop points for both UPS and FedEx. One day I had a UPS package to drop. It was late in the day and I had missed the cutoff for all of the Access Points. I called the main UPS warehouse and was told there was a drop box at the street next to the mailbox that is emptied every evening at a specific time. I don’t remember the time but I was there in plenty of time and dropped the package as instructed. This was on a Friday.

On Tuesday, I received a frantic call from title informing me the package was not tracking and they were criticizing me for not having dropped the package. I explained what had happened. I gave them the phone number and name of the person I had conversed with before dropping in the box. She called UPS to inquire. They literally sent someone out to the drop box and, behold, there was the package!! So, the drop box was not checked on Friday, maybe Saturday? and Monday. I haven’t dropped there since. The title lady was a little incredulous at UPS. I was too. I have never dropped there since. I just wait until the next day and get a receipt at the Access Point.

@kromedome42303 I had a similar experience almost happened to me. I had a signing where I was instructed to drop the package in a UPS box about a block from the signing. For some reason the signers asked me what I was going to do with the package and I told them where I was going to drop it. They told me do not use that box they never collect from it. God bless the signers who saved me a whole big headache. As it is the UPS store was on my way home so I just took it there

Weirdly I apparently did use the wrong label. But what’s strange is - no one else called me that they didn’t get a package so how did that switch up happen to only this package?

I’ll change my closing process a little, I usually close orders from my car and I had pulled the bag out to put the tracking number in the closing report, so I’ll just write the tracking number down now on the folder sticky note so I don’t pull shipper bags and then they go back in the wrong folder.

Busy is good but ouch that was embarrassing. Live and learn.

that only happens when you’re busy. .

Then the hiring company tells me the title company now wants me to only drop where I can get a receipt for the next few times - even though to do so would add 70 miles to any order and I asked if I would be compensated and I’m told no.

What’s interesting is the title company in question has me on a prefered list and when I asked about the request - that wasn’t their request. Which confirms what I felt from the beginning that I was given the wrong label.

Because if I used the wrong label - wouldn’t they have received someone else’s package? Wouldn’t someone else have said where’s my documents?

In 6 years, I’ve taken 16 orders from that signing service. I will probably survive if they don’t give me more orders. Because courier 70 miles to get a receipt and not get compensated?

Yeah I’m not doing that. This was the first reported error in 6 years. Come on, now.

That’s insane. I would tell them that in no universe will I be driving an extra 70 miles just to get a receipt. If they choose to no longer send work my way because of it, then so be it.

I have no sympathy whatsoever. 16 assignments already? You’ve made them at least two grand. Maybe you should contact that title company and plead your case with them.

The title company has hired me already direct for one. I’m not going to sweat this. It’s 16 in six years - so it’s not a big deal. Especially when the title company hires me anyway. With no scan required.

I work in a rural area a lot and the only local shipping center is a little mom & pop office supply shop. I am very fortunate because have a guaranteed daily pick up contract with both FedEx and UPS on weekdays, but they don’t provide receipts either. Thankfully, my packages have never been late, except for severe weather situations, but whenever I ship from there, I just print an extra copy of the shipping page from the file … so it already contains all of the necessary details … then I have them hand write the date and time they received it and sign it. They are totally fine with doing that little extra step and it has definitely saved my bacon a time or two! I also sign up for email notifications on all of my signings so that I can be proactive and reach out to title first in the event a package is delayed. I always breathe a little easier when I get the “your package has been delivered” notification.

That’s a good idea having a label signed to serve as a receipt. Thanks that’s a good one.
