Advice to new Notaries

I’m about 6 months in and last night I finished my 150th signing. By all stretches I’m still a novice but wanted to just share some things I’ve learned, both good and bad. I just wanted to share some things and resources I wish I had when I first began.

if your feeling overwhelmed lost, and don’t seem to be making any forward progress, your not alone, it’s normal and it will come. You will get out of this exactly what you put into it. Find signing services this forum is a great place to start, draft up an email with a short paragraph or less bio about yourself and what you have to offer. And they don’t mean what services you have to offer but sell yourself that you are reliable professional, clean, cut attentive to detail why you are going to make the title company law office signing service, etc. look like a superstar when you arrive at their signers home.

In the beginning offers for signings may come in slower or you may have to take less than ideal signing opportunities, but when they do come, make sure to leave a memorable impression on the signers. Go slow don’t guess if you don’t know the answer to something it’s OK to tell them you don’t and call your signing service debt the answer.

Mistakes - this is a big one you are going to make mistakes in the beginning. You’re gonna make a lot and it’s going to be frustrating because it’s going to cost you time. What will make you stand out when a mistake happens is owning it being upfront and honest and doing everything you can to correct the mistake. what everyone involved is looking for is a completed signing full stop.

Learn from your mistakes - mistakes are incredibly frustrating and can be embarrassing, but mistakes are only as big of a deal as you make them out to be. Most title companies, lawyers, offices, and signing services won’t even remember you made a mistake if you work hard to own and fix it promptly, however, they will remember and likely never use you again if you ignore them. Mistakes happen just own them and fix it easy as that.

Last is sell yourself. I know I’m repeating myself from the beginning however, this is so important. Anytime I get a signing opportunity with a new title company signing service attorney, etc.. after confirming the appointment I email the you are signing service back and just let them know that I may full-time Notary and after I do a five star job on the signing if they keep a priority list, I’d love to earn a place on it. You have done a five star job and the signing is complete email them and let them know what geographic areas you work in and if you specialize in certain signing types and just ask again if they keep a priority list how you can earn a place on that list

A note to the last part about marketing yourself always ask permission for a place on their list. You’re asking them to do something for you. Also do it light touch and following up every couple of weeks with a short email asking if they have any signing opportunities available or coming available is never a bad idea as long as you are not being a pest.

Please feel free to DM me. Notorious work has been some of the best most rewarding work. I’ve ever done in my life. If I can help another new Notary, I would love the opportunity to do so.

Thank you for this post. I have literally signed up for nearly every signing company out there and I have not gotten any assignments for actual loan closings. I had one tell me I need at minimum 100 loan closings before they will accept me, but I can’t get one to even get the ball rolling. I’ve emailed local businesses introducing myself and sharing a little about me and my background. Any tips and suggestions you can share will be very appreciated.
