[Bill Update] Online Notaries Public Bill Passes CA Assembly

On Thursday, January 27th, the California Assembly held a vote on the Online Notarization bill currently moving through the California Legislature. The bill was passed by 51 “aye” to 4 “nay” votes. The bill will now move to the Senate where it will be assigned to an appropriate committee for a final hearing in the coming months.

The California League of Independent Notaries is still in strong support of this bill for the following reasons;

-the opportunity for California notaries to venture into the expanding virtual notarization space,
-the strong data privacy protections provided for both the public and notaries public,
-liability protections provided for online notaries public from bad industry actors,
-the creation of a new notarial act (copy certification of electronic records), and much, much more!

At this time we are not asking you to do anything. We simply wanted to reach out to inform you of the progression of AB 1093 and tell you how we feel about the bill. In the months ahead, we’ll keep you posted on how the bill is progressing and when you should take action.

Matt, Thank you for all of your hard work on AB1093 Bill. I appreciate how much negotiating you have done to protect California Notaries who will be implementing RON services. Thank you for keeping California Notaries informed and up to date with each legislative process. Wishing you much success this year!
