I am trying to sign up for a Notary service, and they are asking me who my closest relative is and what there phone number is. Is this question routine for signing up for these agencies. I am very new to this and I’m not quite sure. Thanks for any imput.
LOL … my first question was “where the he** are they sending her that they need next of kin info???”
Quick answer … They don’t … Never been asked for that in the 13 years I did signings here in Florida and would not give that info anyway … None of their business.
@Bruninotary You instinct is on target to question providing this type of data.
As an Independent Contractor [IC] for more than a decade, I’ve never experienced an incident wherein the name of next-of-kin & their contact data was requested/demanded. It would be a Hard Pass if posed.
Let’s say that data was demanded of me, then my response would be along the lines of: "Please explain why that information is germane to my role as an IC within your organization.’

It’s presumed that those who created the ‘Application’ for vendors/[ICs] to provide services to their organization has conflated the role of an IC with the role of an employee within their application design.
Maybe, a simple ‘copy & paste’ was performed of a corporate application to create ‘their application.’ Certainly, not something we know at this juncture; however, there is no ‘need to know’ for this data.
It sounds like someone extracted the questions from a standard employment application. Be very careful what personal information you provide to any one you’re doing business. The only thing they need is a W9 with your EIN on it.
I’ve started asking for the SS or TC’s EIN number. I do this incase of a no pay and I can take a write down the debt and collection costs. A legitimate business will have no trouble with this.
