Hi cooscountynotary ~ interesting inquiry but what state are you in? Different laws for different states.
Are you saying that you only get one signature per signing and not one for each document?
Can you identify a fake driver’s license by just looking at it? The ability to read and decipher the info within the barcode helps identify fakes.
While barcodes are one of several steps available for us to examine, keep in mind barcodes can also be forgeries. You’ll also need access to the issuing government agency to verify if the DL/ID is valid. This access is becoming more restricted as time moves forward.
One needs to look at the other various and several fraud prevention features on a DL/ID. Here is a list of the more common ways to check a DL/ID. Do not rely on only one of these elements, rather use several to improve your odds of hold a valid ID. Also include a note in your journal about how you ‘verified’ the Photo ID, to show you were being reasonable and prudent.
-
Use a UV flashlight to spot the UV features on the DL/ID. Each state uses different UV features.
-
Sometimes there are images hidden from view under normal lighting, that become visible when a UV light is shown on the card. Texas has/had the state flower, a Blue Bonnet that glowed under UV light on the reverse side.
-
Check the edge to see if an overlay has laid upon the DL. You can use your thumb, like checking to see if a knife edge is sharp. If it feels loose or like there’s two layers, take a closer look.
-
Look for a hologram or shadow image the resembles the photo of your signer on the card. This sometimes requires your magic lamp, aka UV flashlight.
-
Some older DL/IDs had laser drilled holes in the shape of the State, that you could hold up the light and see through.
-
Some States are starting to use color shifting ink. I’m not certain if this has been widely deployed.
-
Some States have embedded between the layers the person’s DOB. This embedded DOB will glow under UV light. Make certain what glows matches the DOB on the ID and the paper work.
-
Pick up a copy of the NNA’s ID booklet each year. This will help you keep up with changes.
All for now, comments invited.
