I recently accepted an assignment paying $100.00, not knowing the size of the assignment. As it turned out, it was a one-page document that required a Notary. The assigning agent ASAP Pro Notary came back and said, oh since it is only one page, the fee is now $50.00. I am rural and the assignment is 40 miles away, this is taken into consideration when I respond to an assignment. I am not happy, but I did accept the assignment, unlike ASAP, I will live up to my acceptance. Has anyone experienced where one price was offered and then later rescinded?
A deal is a deal. Under the circumstances, I would have given it back. I do have to add that if you’re willing to take an assignment that’s an 80 mile round trip while NOT knowing the size of the assignment, you’re seriously undercutting yourself at only $100.
Yes, but often times I am going that way for other reasons, so it helps to pay for a trip that otherwise I would not get any benefit. It is our shopping city. Yes, I really have thought about giving it back. I just won’t accept any future offers from them.
Agreed with Arichter! A deal is a deal. Let’s reverse this if you accidentally accepted $100 and found out afterward that it’s in Timbuktu. You can’t go back to them and say I need more money, you’ll bite your tongue and be professional and get out there and complete the assignment successfully. And note that as a lesson learned.
Under the circumstances I would have turned it back too - I wouldn’t go that far for one piece of paper and $50 - I would have suggested sites where they can find notaries in the zip code but I, too, would have turned it back. (For the record my fee to drive 45-50 miles one way for a refi was $150.00).
I disagree with that, too. There’s no way you can ‘accidentally’ accept a fee and only find out the details later. Hiring party either didn’t know (happens) or intentionally omitted the little details. Either calls for renegotiation when discovered. I can also see hiring party attempting to renegotiate under circumstances of original post because they also ‘didn’t know’ the mileage/travel time warranted the fee originally quoted.
You are correct. My example was pretty extreme! I would never accept an offer without checking the signing location for distance and time for traveling!!
Additional item to consider: The major Red Flag would be the company ASAP Pro Notary.
Lisa Harrow has a long and checkered negative reputation (No Pay/Lo Pay as well as scenarios like the one you experienced) on a number of websites.
Not worth it.
If you have a confirmation email with the $100 fee, it is a legal binding contract.
They are in breach of contract and a simple filing in small claims court will result in a judgment in your favor.
