RON bill signed by VT governor

A bill, H.511, has passed the Vermont General Assembly and been signed by the governor.

  • It goes into effect July 1, 2022.
  • Beginning July 1 the authority to certify copies will be restored to VT notaries; this was taken away several years ago.
  • The way I read it, notaries will be able to certify that a tangible (paper) copy is a true copy of an electronic record, even if they don’t have the RON/electronic notarization endorsement.
  • RON and electronic notarization will be allowed once notaries obtain a special endorsement from the Office of Professional Regulation (OPR) within the Secretary of State’s office. That won’t be possible until OPR issues rules for how to get the endorsement.
