BEWARE NewRez

Please be aware that there is a scam that appears to be targeting notaries. If you receive an email from anyone with NewRez in the mail extension, title or any attachments, DO NOT OPEN! Associated with those legitimate looking emails is either what appears to be a job offer or a pending payment of an offer you are supposed to have completed. This is a SCAM with a vicious malware attachment. I have been successful in avoiding an email hack until two weeks ago when I received such a notice and didn’t realize it was a hack until I opened the “encrypted attachment”. Thank goodness someone called me to inquire why they were contacted by my company, who had received one of what turned out to be thousands of emails that then went out under my business email address. Within the first few hours of this hack I was able to have my computer scanned, swept and cleaned up, but not before some inconvenient interruption of my business activities.

Sorry to hear this happened to you, Jo Ann. Glad you got everything resolved quickly, and thanks for the heads-up.

P.S. Did some quick searching and NewRez IS a legitimate mortgage/loan financial entity. Wonder if they’ve been spoofed or hacked.

@Tisino Thank you for the heads-up & for sharing the details.

Great response to the emergency! Glad to read that everything has been restored back to normal.

You are correct, Linda. I did some searching before opening up the email. However, what I did not do is hover over the sender name. Once I did that I noticed the the sender information was from a someone@northcountyhomerepair.com, not anyone from newrez.com. That’s when I realized it was a scam. I now only open mail after i hover over the sender name to see if I can make an association that seems legit.

Please understand I wasn’t criticizing you - I did the search to see if NewRez was real and found some stuff. That’s why I say maybe they’d been spoofed or hacked.

Much appreciate the heads up
and the reminder to ‘hover first’.

I got that same email and do the same research so I dont open those attachments. Thanks for the heads up

I did not take your comment as a criticism, Linda. I added additional information just to be clear about my particular situation. Thank you for the prompt.

My mortgage was transfered to them and they seem to be active in my general area as I am getting requests through one of the platforms - but nothing direct. These scammers are getting so clever. I have been in the habit of looking at the email addresses for some time now.
