Determining Business usage for home office deducations

When trying to determine business usage of your home for tax purposes do you divide the square footage of the office by the total square footage of the home (which includes porches, storage, carport, etc) or only by the total living area. can’t find this clarification anywhere. thx

Hi lesgeauxnotaryservices, and welcome to the forum.

This is just my guess, but it seems that it is based on square footage of just the space used as your workspace.
This is from policygenius.com, found through a Google search:

“The value of the home office deduction with the simplified method is the square footage of your home office multiplied by $5 . However, the maximum deduction is $1,500 because you can only deduct up to 300 square feet.”

Hope that is helpful.
