High Fees and the Wait for Assignment

I get asked to go to some out of the way places for sure. But some of those places I charge substantially more. I was asked today to go to a place called Trout Lake which is a tiny little town at the foot of Mt. Adams. The only way there is a winding two lane highway that part of has no guard rail because it’s so narrow.

I actually LOVE to go there because I take my camera. It’s only 75 miles but it takes almost 3 hours to get there.

And every time I get a request and I counter my fee for that drive, the hiring company puts off scheduling me because they are NOT from around here and have no idea it can take almost 3 hours to drive 75 miles.

If they are lucky the time frame might still be open when they break down and approve my fee. But it might not. Because there are a ton of requests coming through. Same day is popular today.

oof good luck! Hopefully it’s not to late.

Lol. I do understand that completely. I live in SC…unfortunately lots of roads are labeled “highway” but they aren’t really. That can make a big difference when a signing order comes in appearing to be a short distance but, in actuality, is only as the crow flies! One of the major highways, I-85, is constantly a traffic jam, and in some places it is 6-10 lanes wide (both directions).

Signing orders from folks who aren’t around here don’t get that it seems close but can take much longer to arrive. Lots of orders are around rush hours, but one accident can snarl traffic to a standstill.

I live about 62 miles from Brevard, NC. It’s a beautiful community but the drive is often up to 2.5 hours when 18 wheelers get messed up by their gps. Frankly, the main way to get there has many points where there is no access to an actual highway or even a place to pull over or turn around.

As a former SC resident I am all to familiar with I-85. I also lived in Atlanta for a couple of years and that was the worst traffic I have had to deal with.

I have “driven” through Atlanta 4 times…to/from the aquarium and to/from Oklahoma…that was enough…
