Notaries Through History - Washington, D.C. - 1881

Emma Millinda Gillett was the first female notary public in the United States, appointed by President Garfield in 1881.

After teaching is Pennsylvania public schools for ten years, Emma Millinda Gillett traveled to Washington D.C. in 1880 to study law at Howard University. Emma graduated from Howard in 1882 and passed the bar exam in 1883.
