I’m preparing for a refi signing tomorrow afternoon and came across a “notary identification statement” page in the doc package.
In the top half, I fill out the name of each borrower, their ID type, ID number, birth date, expiration date. Then, each borrower has to sign.
The bottom half says:
“I certify the identification as stated above was provided to me at the time the borrower and/or co-borrower executed documents for the states order number. I have not provided borrower and/or co-borrower with advice, counsel or an opinion concerning the content of the documents executed. I further certify that I am certified by the secretary of state of ____ county and the state of PA as a notary public and my commission has not expired or been revoked.”
Then, it has a place for my signature, date, and “notary seal”. Below that, information about my E&O insurance. There is no notarial certificate.
Isn’t it illegal to notarize my own signature AND place my seal on a document with no certificate?
Does anyone have any experience with this document?
I would sign it, print my name under the line, and provide other info requested, but I would not stamp it; you’re right - it’s not a notarial act. And I would attach a post-it note to it stating “pursuant to the laws of the State of Pennsylvania I am precluded from affixing my seal to anything but a notarial act”.
I have those from time to time, and the answer is NO! You don’t have (you can’t) notarize your own signature. Just put all the info from borrower’s id and at the bottom print and sign your name.
I know you’re looking where it reads “SEAL” but that’s not the purpose.

It didn’t say seal, it actually had a space for my “notary stamp”. I just filled everything else out and didn’t space my stamp. Haven’t heard anything back yet! Hopefully it won’t be an issue with them. If it is, oh well. They’re asking me to do something illegal in PA.
