Many lenders only require one…some still require two. I just now wondered that if a Real ID compliant license is presented (the one with a star on it), is it acceptable as the only ID even when a bank says they want two IDs presented. The Real ID is the one that will be required for domestic airline flights, military bases and government buildings starting in May (unless they delay it again). In order to get a Real ID, multiple forms of verifiable identification have been vetted and cross-referenced by the state issuing the ID. So, it should meet the requirements of the Patriot Act.
The Patriot Act doesn’t tell banks exactly how to identify their customers. It tells banks they have to establish an identification policy. So each bank can have a different policy.
Per the hiring company’s request, you must provide two forms of identification. The Patriot Act is a law passed by Congress, but it doesn’t say which forms of ID are acceptable. Instead, it mandates that institutions collect certain identifying information and verify it according to their own risk-based standards. So, to be safe, provide the types of IDs listed on the Patriot Act form. Don’t substitute identifications that are not listed, unless there’s a line that says “other”.
You can read the Patriot Act in a package. Many lenders require only one ID and the Act Form always states which it is. It is up to the lender. You do not always need two forms of ID. Check the form and instructions.
Should also be in the instructions for a job.
If they say they want two - they want two.
The 2nd can be a COSTCO card. Or a carry permit. But no verified ID replaces a request for two.
Follow instructions not forum advice.
@kromedome42303 As I often express on the Notary Cafe forum:
- Always employ critical thinking skills
- Make decisions from a business owner viewpoint (not an employee)
- Utilize your individual State Notarial Handbook for insights & guidance for establishment of a foundational baseline to operate from for your business decisions
- Review the Signing Order [SO] instructions in detail prior to reaching out to the hiring entity for clarifications
- Seek out the guidance & support of fellow business owners via a reliable & professional online format; i.e., Notary Cafe
.
.
NOTE: Of course, each Business Owner/Notary Cafe member is entitled to their opinion & to express it (if they choose to do so).
Remember that anyone who spreads discord & negativity certainly is demonstrating that they have an ulterior motive.
Anyone who repeatedly chose to break the law & place the safety of others At-Risk definitively is NOT speaking from a position of sagacity, insight, & support.
GENERAL GUIDELINE:
- Employ critical thinking skills.
- Consider the source
- Evaluate the potential ulterior motive
- Trust your instincts
No one has the right to insult the intelligence of other Notary Cafe members.
No one has the right to negate a member’s reason/rationale for generously participating & contributing to the Notary Cafe forum by telling others to ignore forum advice.
No one has the right to guide members to blindly follow the instructions of the hiring entity.

If they require 2 you need two!
