Just received the doc package. One of the pages titled “Notice To Notary Public” was to complete my contact information, etc. No problem. But, it also requested me to place my notary stamp on the page. Since I’m not notarizing any signatures on this document, I objected to this request as an improper use of my stamp. It’s too early to know if they’ll object to my objection. But, I’m just wondering what others think.
Well, they know better, but you can sorta get around it by putting an X across the stamp, if they go all weird on you…
Since you don’t give your state, it’s hard to say if the request is illegal or just a bad idea.
Oh, sorry. I’m in Kentucky.
Yeah, I thought about writing VOID across it after posting my question. Thanks.
In California, we are not allowed to use our notary stamp unless notarizing. In cases such as OP describes, I write “see attached” and send a copy of my notary commission. Never had a problem with that procedure.
I like that idea. I think that’s the way I’ll handle it, if they object to my objection. So far not a peep from them. Thanks.
Putting your stamp on the document is the same as “self-notarizing”. You cannot notarize your own statement, identity or signature. I leave those pages blank all the time and I have never gotten pushback.
I get packages from one company that includes an identification verification where the notary verifies the signer they are notarizing and provides their E & O policy info and a copy of their stamp. I affix my stamp so it’s across lettering and so invalid. It satisfies the hiring company who wants confirmation of the signer and the notary.
I never add my stamp to those pages. I haven’t had any objections yet.
Don’t stamp. I just put a delete sign through the spot.
Same here, not once since I was a baby notary. We don’t notarize our own signatures.
After being a notary public since 2012, I saw this same request for the first time a few months ago and, like you, I questioned it. I called a notary company I trust to ask about this. Apparently, this is not unusual, and I was told to draw a line through my stamp and write “for reference only” or “for proof only.” The company that requested my stamp on that page now knows what it looks like, but I took care of the fact that I wasn’t notarizing my own signature.
I’ve seen this form plenty of times, you just write in your commission number and expiration date, no need to use your stamp. never had a problem with it.
I had this happen on one occasion and because I did not notarize anything and did not put my stamp I was given an error. After I went round and round and told them that that violates law for using your stamp they took the error away. I get quite a few packages from the same signing service group that has this on it. Just to make life easier I do a little asterisk on it and say no notorial act performed and I’ve never had another problem with it. Hope this helps
Oh that makes more sense.
Maybe you don’t need a stamp
Hi there. Upon those requests, I put a foward slash / across my stamp and initial on the side. That way, they cannot reuse my stamp for anything.
