The nuances of this business can be a blessing or a curse

This serves as an update to my earlier post concerning the renewal of my Remote Online Notary (RON) commission. I am pleased to announce that my commission renewal has finally been approved by the state of Florida! It’s been a challenging process, as government agencies have been experiencing significant turmoil and substantial backlogs, largely attributed to ongoing staffing shortages and changes. As a result, the Remote Online Notary (RON) segment of my business was unfortunately forced to temporarily cease operations due to a series of unforeseen complications. To illustrate, back in August of 2025, I initially submitted my application. I was told by the state that was premature, so my RON application was rejected. Unfortunately, I wasn’t informed of the issue until March 17, 2026, necessitating a resubmission of the application. Adding to the challenges, the notary department was grappling with a significant backlog in processing RON applications. This situation had a noticeable impact on my business, resulting in an estimated loss of approximately 5 signing orders per week. Since my RON commission didn’t expire until 04/02/2026, those four days loss of business was very noticeable. Considering that the notary profession is fundamentally a transactional business, such losses have undeniably had a considerable impact on my overall financial performance and bottom line. Now, I have to do a lot of catch up work, contacting all my vendors and update my profile to get back in their que. Fortunately, during that window of time, I was able take care of a medical situation and had cataract surgery on both eyes. Now I am ready to get back to business. Here’s a tip for those who want to do this business full time, your have to create and fund your own benefit package, such as life, health, disability short and long term (sickness and accident) and retirement. You need to have in place working capital to cover unforeseen events that can disrupt your business operations. Things are going to happen and when it does, it is never at a good time.
