Hi! I had a signing today and my commission expires in 2028, but I stupidly put todays’ year (2024), on the the line where I write down when my commission expires. I was asked by the Title Company to correct it of course, but my question is, can I cross out the date and initial by it to fix it or do I have to go back to the signer and get the page resigned and re-notarized with the correct date?
@raemikc Where are you located?
I’m located in northwest Ohio
PROHIBITED ACTS = REVOCATION - O.R.C. 147.14
(A) A NP shall not do any of the following:
(12) Amend or alter a notarial certificate after the notarization is complete;
Hope this helps
You can fix it. HERES 20 CHARACTERS
So I’ll alter my answer to say I have been told I can fix it without going back. Who actually knows you did not fix at the table?
Your commission, your call
I looked up the law on the Ohio website. The manual has an error in the heading, it’s section 147.141 paragraph 12.
I notice the original poster is indicating she wanted to make the correction the same day. If the correction is made the same day, before anyone other than the signer and the notary sees it, one could argue it isn’t any different than fixing something the notary finds as the notary is reviewing the documents while sitting at the table.
