Great suggestion, but in the real world, this will not work with signing services that blast out orders via text or email. By the time you go through all the steps to calculate what your fee is for the signing, someone else will have grabbed it at the fee offered. Assumng that you know the idiosyncracies of the area that you cover, you should already have that information in your head when you decide “yes” or “no” or “counteroffer” in responding (or not) to a blast request.

If you’re suggesting to take the order and then come back later and ask for a fee revision, I don’t think that’s a good business practice that will endear you to the hiring companies. I would avoid doing that unless something substantially changes in the order since the time you initially accepted it. You may get away with it once or twice, but once they see a pattern with you doing that, it won’t bode well for your future business dealings with that company.

@steves11 Oh No, Steve. hmmm . . . :open_mouth:

.

The suggestion solely was to share the insight that as a Professional Signing Agent [PSA] it’s best to AVOID utilizing the “mileage” within the call/text/blast, etc. as the number is as the proverbial crow flies - not actual driving mileage.

Most know the approximate mileage to common intersections within their region. They’ll be able to quickly utilize their already calculated Schedule of Fees & their own estimated mileage for a more accurate fee.

It should only take a nanosecond or two for the mental calculation.

NOTE: If the actual mileage is 2 or 3X greater, then yes, definitively a Fee Revision email would be appropriate.

@steves11 P.S. If they don’t already have a personalized Schedule of Fees, here is a direct Notary Cafe url link to a thread containing the Guidelines to create a Schedule tailored to their business:

Oh, I never use the mileage that they suggest. The few times that I’ve checked it against the real mileage out of curiosity, it’s always lower. The thing that really gets me is when they call me on the phone and tell me that a location is only “X” miles from me. Right…nevermind the fact that it’s at the peak of rush hour traffic and will take me 45-60 minutes to get there, besides the fact that their mileage is always lower than the actual mileage anyway.

“It should only take a nanosecond or two for the mental calculation”

Right…your initial post made it sound like we have to take out our calculators, check Google Maps and figure out our fuel costs. Thanks for the clarification!
