I took an ASAP PDQ mid-day between scheduled appointments… it was quick & interesting. The signer was just of legal age to consent (NHNT); there was a mega yacht involved and because of the heavy ton chopper in operation nearby … it was giving Miami Vice. Any who, the loan package was executed and scanned back without incident. I go about the remainders, quick work but late work. I get a flutter of emails Monday from Tittle asking for tracking, so I scan back “proof of drop” quickly only to be asked why it hadn’t been done same day. My question.: If you miss Fridays’ drop, do you automatically drop the package 1st thing Saturday?
IMD please note: No same day drop was specified on the order. In my inexperience I thought the scan backs were enough to initiate prefunding (for most lenders) and next business day drops were “standard” practice.
Heads up - I see loan packages as a “hot potato” (lol). I like to get them out of my hands ASAP to lower my liability risk. Good idea to ask the company what their drop policy is, even if they want scanbacks.
I drop same day, or if it is a late signing next day, even on Saturday. Where I live Fed-Ex doesn’t pick up on Saturday, but I would rather drop as soon as possible and not hold on to the docs.
I’m with @cfletcher as to his “hot potato” comment; if I don’t make same day drop I always made sure it was dropped first thing next day. When I had signings that were anytime after noontime, depending on location, I’d give title/hiring party a heads up that package may not drop until next day due to our rural area ( we have no FedEx drop boxes in my county and only one or two authorized shippers).
BTW - “making the drop” for me does not mean a drop box - it means an authorized shipper who can physically give me a receipt.
@Arichter Speaking of facts, remember drop boxes = no receipts. Receipts are our best defense against those sneaky accusations. Anyone else ever gotten a phone call from a title person, implying we lost the loan package? I have, and having that shipping receipt gave me so much peace of mind. I just said, “Want me to scan it to you?” That way, they could figure it out, instead of blaming me.
On ASAP rush closes I think communicating last ship time is imperative. In my little town in Eastern WA, FedEx is 1:00pm if I’m lucky and UPS is 3:00pm if I am still lucky. I always communicate it up front.
Now if I am near the airport in either direction when I close and no scan is required, I can drop by 3:30pm and 4:30pm. But if i’m not already in that town, that’s a charge. If a Saturday ship is required and I’m not going to already be in those areas, that’s a charge. It’s rare to get paid to drop on a Saturday but they always know it won’t happen without a fee.
I state drop cut off when I accept an order. This is a rural area and there is one cut off time for same day shipping. I make sure everyone I work for knows that. I think that’s an important thing to do. The order doesn’t have to state same day drop - as a notary I always assume they want things returned yesterday. So I discuss it right off the bat when I confirm an order with the signer.
The only way to get assignments that are possible is to educate the schedulers in large metropolitan areas who have no idea. Especially LA - Lord they spoiled in LA.
So anyway. My personal rule is always assume they want same day ship and always tell them when it’s dropping for shipping on what day. It works pretty well.
Hi! I try to drop the same day. If the last pick up has already happened, I may drop first thing the next day (if it’s really late) whether or not it is a Saturday. I photo the receipt and send it while at Fedex. I am lucky enough to live near both Fedex and UPS stores.
We don’t have enough information. Was this signing done and you should have had enough time ship if you didn’t have other assignments? How close is a Saturday shipper to you? Title doesn’t know what other appointments you may have and expect things to be shipped unless you make other arrangements with them. If a Saturday shipper was close and you didn’t utilize them, then also on you. I always let title know if I see any shipping conflicts. Especially on late Fridays because I can not ship FedEx on a Saturday but I can ship UPS until 11pm. It is the Notarys job to ensure documents are shipped promptly and time must be budgeted correctly.
I am in the midst of all shippers with convenient times for drop… my issue is that they did not express the need for a same day drop and the tone of the correspondence left me feeling like the scapegoat, lamb to sacrifice. My operations require a scan back initially… which they received. The lack of communication and presumption is what I was curious about… so I thought to ask if everyone knows to drop ASAP because MC and a couple other SS require approval B4 drop and they already had the scans. Not everyone observes the sabbath but a heads up would have been transparent.
This… this was my thought when I received the calamity on Monday. I simply do not work on Saturday, it’s the sabbath. So, when I missed the cut off (which wouldn’t have happened if they would have let me know a SDD was required); I would have altered my schedule to accommodate them. It was all I could do not to match the level of disrespect I received in their emails). No foul, my $225 fee was untouched despite it all. Interesting the responses here… yours I found most reasonable. Thx Ms. Richter…
I am the same way. Turn around it lightning fast “usually”. This was a one off due to the immediacy of their request. No LSA worth their salt holds on to any executed document. I was just astonished at how quickly they went to BLAME me for not knowing their expectations.
Word to the wise. When choosing a Saturday drop location with fedex, be sure and see if they have a pickup and when that deadline is. Some offices have pickup, some dont. I recently got reemed because I missed the Saturday pickup time and lender waa not going to get docs until Tuesday.
Immediately after… they were so busy attempting to admonish me they neglected to mention the scan uploaded, or the scan added to their inquiry concerning the drop.
