The postal store I use for dropping off FedEx packages does not provide receipts. I would have to drive to the actual FedEx store which is miles away. I’ve had several signing services ask for a receipt and I tell them it’s not possible, and they don’t object. I always check the FedEx tracking soon after their pickup and haven’t had any problems.

@paul.jasmine.notary Thank you for your perspective. Of course, it’s up to you, as the business owner , to determine the amount of risk that you’re willing to bear in regard a critical element in the chain-of-custody regarding the executed docs.
There are MANY who have found themselves in a serious battle , when they’ve utilized a drop box or an “Authorized Location ” that doesn’t provide receipts nor scan in the package.
Please Reference the following for a few of the precarious experiences:
I’ve had more than a few packages ‘disappear’ into the shipper’s system. Having the receipt proves I dropped the package on time and puts the onus on either the shipper or the receiver (TC’s, Lender, Law Office, Court, IRS, ect.). I’ve had receivers literally yell over the phone about a missing package. I get into the shipper’s portal and find driver’s sign off and the recipient’s name.
I had a Signing Service call me upset that they only received 2 pages of a package I returned. After locating the receipt, I told them well, on the FedEx receipt it says the package weighed 1.68 pounds. After looking, they informed me they had “found” the rest of the package. Without the receipt, I would be held liable for the lousy job. I’ll never forget this one.
Sometimes it may seem like a pain in the ass to have to wait for a receipt, but I assure you that it will be worth it if you need it. The first person they will blame if a package goes missing is the notary. Having that receipt to prove that you made the dropoff is vital.
From many fellow professional signing agents [PSAs] as well as in my direct experience, the small amount of additional expense for traveling a few additional miles is well worth the peace of mind afforded by taking that extra step to ensure that a receipt & package scan in are accomplished.

Here are two additional helpful threads:
It would be in your best interest to jot down all of the expenses associated with performing the services you provide within your service region to determine a baseline operating cost. Then, at that point, you can calculate the fees that will generate a net profit to determine if you’ll have a Profit or sustain a Loss at that rate.
There are many items to consider within your Overhead calculations. Here are a few to get you started:
• telephone expenses including cell phone equipment and month…
To preface this, I’ve been a lurker on these forums for quite some time and I’ve noticed a ton of expectations lately that seem too unrealistic. I’m a NSA out of Michigan and have been one for the past 7 years. I usually pull in at least 8k worth of business every month but it takes a LONG time to get to that point. I see a ton of newer notaries looking to make fast money or expecting SS or TC to come to them over seasoned notaries while they have very little experience.
A few tips that I’d sug…

Too many posts to go through, so If not mentioned before. I insist on getting a receipt showing the tracking number of each package dropped. They are saved in my expense receipts so that I can back up any additional miles taken for package dropoffs in case of an audit.
