Hello, I have been seeing a lot of IRA Appliation coming up on signing platforms. Does anyone have any knowledge of what the notarizing would involve?
I’ve received a few of these, too, If anyone has completed one of these–how many pages, notarizations? Do you have to collect additional documentation? Any quirks to know about? Platforms NEVER seem to provide all the info we need to determine an appropiate fee.
I have done several of these and they are easy money. I have been paid between $75-$100 each. There is usually about 13-15 pages (x2) of print with 2 notarizations. You print and execute both sets of docs. One set is left with the signer and one set is scanned and sent back. I have never had to drop any package for these. The ones I have done come with step by step instructions so it is almost impossible to miss something. The signer signs their name about 3 times and prints their social once. You notarize the transfer agreement and the POA. Usually takes about 20 minutes or so. These are usually people buying gold and they’re transfering money from their 401k or other savings to purchase. I wish I could do 10 of these a week. ![]()
Thank you. Much appreciate the info.
All of this has been my experience also. The only thing I’ll add is that they want a picture of the signer holding their ID next to their face. The two I’ve done haven’t had any issues with that, but I find it an interesting request.
Same here. I forgot to mention that part.
Thank you so much for this informaation!
Thank you for this! I have been wanting to grab some, so this is very helpful!
I agree 100%. I will take these every time. All of mine have been $100 or more. Once you do a few and learn to set the expectation to have their photo ID ready to be taken a pic of by their face, it usually only takes about 10 minutes to complete. (They tell me that they really appreciate the heads up on the picture taking)
Interesting that yours have been for gold purchases. Mine have been mostly transfers from their old employer’s 401k to their new employer’s 401k plan. A couple have been transfers from a 401k to a Roth.
The description they typically give of “IRA Application” is a little misleading, in my opinion. When I see the word “Application” for anything else, I run away… ![]()
Yes I’ve done a few too. They’re very easy. Easy money. I always take them when they come my way
The only ones I’ve done in the past is it acknowledges the spouse knows that the other spouse is withdrawing funds.
Thank you, that’s good to know as well!
Agree with all here. I too have done quite a few of these and wish I could do a ton each day. Once you get the hang of it and prep the signer in advance, it is an easy 10-minute in-out scenario.
Okay, you have me eager to take one now. I can’t wait to see one come through in my area. I am going to grab it. Thanks for the inspiration!
IRA Applications are easy and I charge between $75 and $125 for the signings. I have completed several of them (20). No more than 40 pages and sometime no notarization is involved if any at all. I would take these all day long of given.
I am monitoring Signing Order to watch for some. I am going to grab them now that I this information. Thanks!
My pleasure. We notaries must stick together. Have you every thought of being a NSA if you are not already?
what signing company are you doing the IRA applications for? Please
Sincerely
The ones I did were for Comfortable Closings.
Okay from an Accountants, Tax Preparer, and Fraud prevention stand point. The notarization and ID protocol that this is requiring is because there are a lot more jobs that are remote and very few HR offices. Also, the payroll people in the office are not HR resource so half the time, they don’t know what they are doing. With the paperwork being notarized, they are ensuring that the person sigings is who they are, and like noted in other answers it may be a transfer from one company to another to initiate a 1099-R with a code G in box 7, which means it is not-taxable and a transfer to another plan. Also, the spouse must sign and be notarized if they are married.
If the signers call to have you do it, make sure you see all the pages, not just the signature page, you need to make sure all pages are filled in before notarizing, if not, it is considered altered, as you did not view a completed document. Do not just look at page 15, look at pages 1-14 as well, I get this all the time. Sometimes they come back, sometimes they don’t, but this is due diligence and our job.
Sometimes I get emailed the docs, I do charge by the signature in these cases, so do not quote on the phone, state you need to see the document as they usually lie to you to keep the fee down, and then they try and keep you to your original price.
