Mulitple Commissions?

I am new to the Notary world, and chose this career path due to my husband’s work and travel. Long story short, there are multiple weeks/months when I end up living with him in our RV while he is on a job site. So far, we have been in Oregon, but there is talk of going to Idaho or Utah for the next jobs. How can I get a commission in another state if I do not have a permanent address? I am also curious because even when we are home, I am very close to Washington. I have tried to find out by reading each state’s website, but things get slightly convoluted. Any advice is great?

You have to check the laws for the states you want to get a commission in.

I know there are OR notaries also commissioned in WA and vice versa but I personally stay too busy to add driving to Oregon to consider a dual commission. I drive enough in Eastern Washington.

I’ve spoken to a notary in Oregon who travels into WA State, but I have no idea how she makes any profit doing that. I looked into it, and it was just a pass for me to even consider it.

You’ll still need to check with the state in question. That’s your authority on the subject.

Thank you, appericate the feedback.

@tlstewart.notary a quick search and read of the notary handbook for each state you mentioned (on their SOS website, not ChatGPT or AI)

For Idaho, one requirement is “Be a resident of or have a place of employment or place of practice in Idaho”

Idaho Notary Handbook

For Utah “Lawfully reside in the state or be employed in the state for at least 30 days immediately before the individual applies for a notarial commission”

I’d suggest contacting the SOS of each state and try to speak with someone - ask them if there is a provision for your situation or possibly a waiver of this requirement due to your situation.
