I’ve been noting an uptick of abusive customers lately who disrespect notary public’s. I especially noticed executives who clearly don’t want to spend one iota of their time getting notarized in their offices.
There seems to be no limits nor shame related to humiliating notary publics who own their business. You’ll wait an hour for your neighbor at a hotel to meet with her and she thinks nothing of leaving me empty handed since she forgot her ID. It’s a $20 mobile fee with a time waiver. Didn’t want to pay me! Very disrespectful.
It’s a different world now!
Oh it’s not that simple, it’s the attitudes of executives at corporations expressing how they don’t have the time for a notary public. Their assistants make me wait a long time for them now after I arrive.
- I waited 20 minutes for a a lawyer married couple at their firm. They arrived and were talking as I notarized them about going to their bank to get free notarizations next time. Ever so rude!
- Assistants who used to call you then become notaries expecting you as their former notary how to do apostilles as if they deserve your help.
- A former company that contacts you after 6 months accidentally called at last yahoo! No it was cancelled the next day with their in-house employee notary that took your place.
- You finally hear from last year’s customer only to find his state rejected your California Certificate due to their unlawful issues with capacity. Your customer says he has to now use an online notary his state suggested.
- J.P. Morgan prohibits business notaries on their properties calling them criminal in their database with block from paying them.
- Two women missed UPS so they called me. I came in 15 minutes after confirming with them but they left before I arrived without notifying me.
- Loyal customers for years who are wealthy make an appointment for a very cold morning. You get there and it’s redirected to downtown. You get back on your ebike and as you get 1/2 way to their requested location they call to cancel! The two customers say they will figure out how to share your mobile fee payment for your efforts.
These are only a few examples! It seems like these are all scripted so it’s hard to believe it’s all circumstantial. People seem very aware notaries are targeted for AI replacement.
Set clear expectations: Signer must have valid photo ID. Travel fee due if signer unable to sign for any reason. Wait time: $X/15 minutes.
Adding a little something, something to what Arichter posted:
What OP posted sounds like GNW (general notary work). If most of your work comes from your website and all your terms of service are outlined in your website, don’t assume customers have diligently read your terms. When you make contact with any customer, make sure you go over your terms of service and they fully understand – including all fees.

Totally agree with Yolicue. You cannot underestimate the attention span of the general public. You just have to tell them there are RULES. State the RULES. Then remind them about the RULES.

Ouch! Major metro areas and rural notaries don’t operate in the same universe. My problems are more: I’m calling from a hilltop 1/2 mile from your driveway to tell you you’re going to have to meet me at the end of your drive because ain’t no way my car is going to make it up your 45 degree drive with rocks the size of condor eggs.
