I have a Brother dual tray printer, and have had issues recently with scanning - getting smudges when doing a scan back. I ordered a replacement toner from Amazon, and it seems like this is when the problem started. Has anyone else had an issue with non-manufacturer toners?
So I don’t understand toner isn’t marking a scan.
You need a new imaging unit (drum).
I have a Xerox and I get parts from Amazon a lot cheaper and have no problems with quality.
Thank you - I was thinking that because the toner may not be as high quality, it doesn’t always adhere to the paper as well and causes the smudge when scanning.
I buy the recycled . I recommend not shaking them to get an extra print. That can cause a big mess. (Not that you said you did but I found out the hard way.)
But I use 20 pound paper and have no print issues.
When scans start to look bad I replace the drum. I keep extra everything on the shelf.
So it’s not your ink in my opinion.
@mdelaney107 - Toner has absolutely nothing to do with making a scan. When you scan, your scanner is “taking a picture” of the document. The only time toner comes into play is when you are printing.
Insofar as smudges on your scans, perhaps try cleaning the glasstop that the document travels across to make that image. Use a fiber cloth to avoid scratches on that glasstop.
I have a brother as well. I tried a few different generic toners and eventually just went back to ordering the brother brand, which as least I can still order through Amazon.
I have 3 brother printers and have no problem using less expensive toner from EZINK. I see no point in spending more for the genuine Brother toner as they are way too expensive. My older printer is over 9 yrs and no problems with EZ INK.
Thank you Cathy. I will try that brand. Others leave to much ink on the paper causing random black spots and even slight smearing when running docs through my scanner. I prefer nothing less than perfect. lol. You don’t experience anything like that? I see Amazon carries EZINK too. I also just replaced my drum.
Had the same problem once, turned out to be a combo of generic toner + a dirty scan strip… cleaned it and it improved a lot.
Thanks Mike. Just traded out the generic for the Brother toner and it cleaned up the printing as well as not smudging so much. Looks like I will be sticking with the Brother toner going forward.
