Watch out for this company

What a day. Please consider not working for A Step Above Signing Service.
I accepted a job from them for a signing. First it appeared that the docs would be late, not their fault. Then I get an email that the docs are in and they will send them to me in the morning. So this morning at 6am MST, the docs arrived. I printed the 5 document packages and left for my assignment. I took the time to check the 1st 35 or so pages for the correct names etc, all appeared well.

After an 85 mile drive one way, I sat with the client and started the signing. It became apparent after 45 pages or so that the rest of the docs were for someone elses signing! I called the agency and she found her error in getting the wrong 1/2 doc package to me. She wanted me to print them locally which was not possible. While the wife said maybe she could print them in her office, her husband said no and I agreed for security reasons.

So the signing ended there and I left. Now I’m being blamed by the signing agency because it was all my fault the docs were incorrect. There was also a statement made by the agency that I wouldn’t be paid my fees as agreed upon. This resulted in derogatory emails back and forth between the agency and me.

This is a typical example of the Notary is always at fault and the signing service is not. In my opinion I followed procedures and security policies that my commission requires of me. To lay the blame on me and tell me that my fee will be reduced due to their error is not fair to the Notary. I don’t want this to sound like sour grapes, but after 165 miles and 280 pages printed, I expect to be correctly compensated. Never mind the inconvenience to the client, title and loan company that the Agency above has caused. Please consider this when contacted by the company above for an assignment.

I suppose the signing agency considered the error your fault because you didn’t check all the docs before you went to the signing. The same situation happened to me about eight months ago. I had a stack of signings that day, didn’t check all the docs for correctness, printed them off and ran out the door. One of the packages–was intended for a client back east–I discovered as I sat down with the customer. I called the signing service, it was their error, signing had to be rescheduled. I guess I received a print and gas fee. No fun.

Apparently it’s always a ‘red flag’ when the docs are late, or special circumstances (at the last minute). And if you’re going to be time-pressured, all the more reason to double-check the entire package for errors.
