From my driving with no headlights ticket, appointment that was canceled because - I had no headlights at night.
The judge was the person I was supposed to sign documents with that day.
He asked if I recognized his name, I said why yes, I do recognize your name. He said “I recognize your name, too - by chance are you looking for a defferal on your ticket to have it expunged?”
Why, yes, your Honor - yes I am.
We both sort of chuckled. It costs a lot to get it expunged but it’s worth it.
He was very nice. But it will cost $175 to get it expunged and I have to go 12 months with no ticket. I almost fell over when I saw his name because that whole situation was burned into permanent memory. Between losing the appointment, paying to stay overnight, the tow, today’s drive and the fee. This headlight thing cost almost $700.

Bingo! This is exactly why our fees must reflect all expenses - up to and including vehicle upkeep. It’s not just a matter of printing a few pages and putting on some freshly laundered and pressed clothes and then heading out to the assignment. Nope. There’s wear and tear on our equipment (printers, computers, phones, etc.). There’s wear and tear on our vehicle (fuel, tires, wipers, tags, etc.). There’re taxes to be paid. We must each calculate what fees work for us that will make our business a viable one.
I agree, You would think that people who drive to work each day and in this kind of business of title work, escrows etc would understand this concept. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your experience with court and the cause that put you in that situation. Your experience highlights #yolicue’s comment “Bingo! This is exactly why our fees must reflect all expenses - up to and including vehicle upkeep”.
For most of those Low-Ball Signing Orders [SOs], the financial end result is that there is no net revenue is generated after the out-of-pocket expenses are deducted. (losing money)
While my brother was coming back to the office after a hideously long day and a reverse mortgage to end it, his car hydroplaned and ran off the road down a sand dune. Triple A said they were too busy to come out and the highway patrol insisted the car was towed. There was no collision and he wasn’t obstructing traffic but they called another tow company to come out at nearly midnight to pull the car back up to the road. The car was not damaged, just in the wrong place at the bottom of a sand dune. The bill was $1050 or they would impound the car. Triple A had me file claims twice and then ultimately refused to cover the loss because the tags were out of date. When you are down, get ready to be kicked.
That’s horrible. I renew as soon as I get the thing in the mail. I’ve been through the expired tag conversation before and won’t do that. So sorry that happened.
