Error Fees

What is the fee when you make an error and are they typically deducted from the notary. For the last two years I have been error free until last week and got fined $50 (shipping both ways) and it was deducted from my fee. Is this normal?

Just asking.

Never been fined. Of course, in these many years I have made a couple of errors, which I corrected promptly. But I have never been fined.

@ francis If I’m reading your post correctly, you made an error in a signing and the company had you correct it and pay for the shipping of the corrected docs - correct? That’s not really a “fine” - when a signing agent makes an error, the cost of correcting it is on them. Most times companies will pay for the shipping (because they get a hefty discount from FedEx and UPS for shipping with them) - but apparently you got a company who, I’d say, wanted to “teach you a lesson” by hitting you where it hurts…your wallet.

So, to answer your question, if you make a mistake with a signing it’s not unusual for a company to dock your fee for that error in addition to having you go back out to fix it on your dime. However, the times I’ve had errors, the companies I worked with supplied a shipping label for the document’s return.

Exactly. However, I do maintain a Fedex account specifically so that, should I do something utterly ridiculous enough that I am too embarrassed to ask for a label, I can ship the correction back on my own dime. Happened once. The client was so impressed that I took full responsibility for the goof (as a professional should, IMO), she called me again a week later. Several years later, she remains one of my most regular clients.
